Still alive or not yet dead

Like Captainface shouted in the shoutbox a couple of days ago, the biggest announcement in the past few days was Portal 2, hinted and slowly spoiled by valve in the last years and more frequently on the last weeks. No release dates have been announced so far but we’ll probably be playing it this holiday season. Lots of people are speculating if this could be sold with Half Life 2 :Episode 3 or will be Episode 3 itself but I think it’s a waste of time to day-dream on a plot where the last villain in the series was an AI addicted to cakes.

The second Valve-related news is the (likely) upcoming Steam support for Macs. The Orange box games have been made object of some Mac-inspired ads so it’s not difficult to guess what Valve is hinting.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light has also been announced recently. It’ll be a downloadable game for XBLA and PSN. The game has already been nicknamed Diablo Raider or Lara of Persia. Allow me to say that I knew that Square-Enix would have screwed up. You’ll get a couple of related comics in the next weeks. You can bet on this.

Before giving you the last sad news of this post, I’d like you to know that Super Street Fighter IV will have some extra content for the players that own Street Fighter 4 for the same platform. Hokuto no Ken costume for Abel. I called this first.

Some people complained that we didn’t get a new video of Metroid Other M at the Nintendo Media Summit this year. Well, it got released a few days after that and it’s full of cinematic. I wouldn’t even consider this game in my must-buy list after seeing this if the game wasn’t directed by Yoshio Sakamoto himself. Still, next time models and animations should be done by Epic Games because I just can’t stand plain reflective surfaces with no detail after the awesome work that Retro Studios did with Metroid Prime.

Something to nibble

Cave story Wii is out guys. If you never played the pc version you should really think about it. I won’t play it because I already played the pc version and the time I spend on my Wii shortens every month despite having still a couple of games left to finish. My next PC monitor will have RGB/s-video input, I swear. The thing is that Cave Story may look too “retro” for some people and that’s why I never managed to get some of my friends playing it but I really recommend you to play it if you like metroidvania games and engaging storytelling.

Now that I covered the main news item, I’d like to add some complain paragraphs because it’s all I can do until I lay my hands on Mass Effect 2 or Bioshock 2.

Metroid: Other M: the more I hear about it the more i get scared. I read about it being originally an on-rail shooter, giving more depth to the character, defining the storyline ignoring Prime and stuff like that but I really can’t put up with team ninja developing it. The “remembah me?” meme was generated even before the game was release and we shouldn’t expect at least a big bullshit dialogue/cutscene in the final game? Yokoi please plead for us from up there!

New screens for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Head over to the Sonic 4 Official Site to see them. Sega has been doing a nice job so far copying New Super Mario Bros and I really like the art style. I just can’t stand that “Episode 1″ under the title. Is it just my impression or Sega is a little short of money? They almost release a new sonic game every year with all the downsides this leads to.

Last week Valve release the first update of community content for TF2, including 9 new hats/misc and 3 new weapons. I read the stats on TF2 wiki and I think the new weapons are a bit underpowered compared to most of their unlockable counterparts but I’m confident the players will be able to get the best out of them anyway before they receive a little power-up.

Speaking of unlocks, has anyone sent any mail to Robin Walker yet? If  not I’m going to do it. There are tons of hats and no other way to get them than staying connected. The idle servers are still up and running at full players and thinking that those players have a higher chance of getting a hat really gets me mad. They changed the critical system to be more skill-based and they leave the drop system completely random? Sounds nonsense to me so I’m going to write a short essay about “my” drop system I put together over the last months. It’s completely skill-based, team-oriented and it still allows newbies to get new weapons while playing without paying attention to achievements. Basically, it should work as a reward system for what a player has been able to do in his past matches. I’ll post it here when it’ll be finished and e-mailed.

By the way, I turned 23. You’ll get the usual gift photo on Saturday.
